Business Loan Eligibility for MSMEs
11 August 2026 · 5 min read
MSME lending in India has widened considerably, but eligibility rules remain specific. Knowing where your business sits against each criterion tells you which lenders to approach — and which to skip.
Core eligibility criteria
- ✓Business vintage: at least 24 months of continuous operations
- ✓Annual turnover: commonly ₹40 Lakh and above for unsecured facilities
- ✓CIBIL score: 685+ for promoters, with a clean commercial bureau record
- ✓Profitability: positive net profit in the last filed ITR
- ✓Age of promoter: usually 24 to 65 years at maturity
- ✓Registration: Udyam, GST or Shop & Establishment proof
How turnover is verified
Lenders rarely take a declared figure at face value. GST returns, bank statements and ITR are triangulated, and the lowest credible number generally governs the sanction.
Seasonal businesses — common across Gujarat's textile and agri-linked trades — should be ready to explain lean months. A short written note on the cycle, supported by prior-year statements, prevents credit teams from reading seasonality as instability.
Debt-to-income and existing obligations
Total EMIs after the new loan are typically capped so obligations stay within a comfortable share of surplus. If you are close to that ceiling, consolidating small existing loans before applying often improves both eligibility and pricing.
What to fix if you fall short
- ✓Below the score threshold: correct report errors and rebuild for three to six months
- ✓Thin banking: route more receipts through the primary business account
- ✓GST mismatch: file pending returns and reconcile before applying
- ✓Short vintage: consider a secured facility or a co-applicant with a longer record
Frequently asked questions
›Does Udyam registration improve eligibility?
It establishes MSME status, which is required for several priority-sector and scheme-linked products, and it is straightforward to obtain online.
›Can a loss-making year be explained?
Sometimes, with documentation — a one-off write-off or a capex year can be argued. Consecutive loss years are much harder to place with mainstream lenders.
