How to Correct Errors in a CIBIL Report
11 August 2026 · 5 min read
Reporting errors are more common than most borrowers expect, and they cost real money in the form of higher rates or outright rejection. The correction process is defined and free to initiate.
Errors worth disputing
- ✓A loan you repaid still showing as active or overdue
- ✓An account that does not belong to you, often from a name match
- ✓Incorrect overdue amount or days-past-due entries
- ✓Duplicate reporting of the same loan by one lender
- ✓Outdated personal details that break identity matching
The dispute process
Obtain your full report and note the exact account number and the specific field that is wrong. Raise the dispute with the bureau, describing only that field.
Attach evidence: the closure letter or NOC, a statement showing the final payment, or bank records proving the account is not yours.
The bureau refers the entry to the reporting lender for verification. Resolution generally takes about 30 days from receipt of the lender's response.
Once corrected, pull a fresh report and confirm the change actually landed before making your next loan application.
What cannot be removed
Accurate negative history stays. A genuine settlement, write-off or delayed payment remains visible for the prescribed reporting period. Services promising to erase valid entries are best avoided — the only honest route is time and consistent repayment.
Frequently asked questions
›Is filing a CIBIL dispute free?
Yes, raising a dispute with the bureau costs nothing. Paid help is only about preparing evidence and following through with the lender.
›What if the lender rejects my dispute?
You can escalate with additional documentation, and take the matter up with the lender's grievance officer if the record remains factually wrong.
