How to Improve Your CIBIL Score

11 August 2026 · 6 min read

A credit score is a summary of behaviour, not a switch. Improvement is real but gradual — and anyone promising a specific number by a specific date is not being straight with you.

What the score is built from

  • Payment history — the heaviest single factor
  • Credit utilisation — how much of your available limit you use
  • Credit age — how long your accounts have been open
  • Credit mix — a balance of secured and unsecured accounts
  • Recent enquiries — how often lenders have pulled your report

Actions ranked by impact

Bring credit card utilisation below 30% of the total limit. This is the fastest lever available and often reflects within one or two reporting cycles.

Never miss a due date. A single payment reported 30 days late can undo months of progress; set standing instructions for at least the minimum, and pay the full amount separately.

Stop applying. Give the report three to six clean months without new enquiries before your next serious application.

Keep your oldest card active with small, regularly cleared spends. Closing it shortens your credit age.

Correct genuine reporting errors — closed loans shown as live, wrong overdue figures, or accounts that are not yours.

A realistic timeline

Utilisation changes: visible in roughly 30–60 days. Dispute corrections: about 30 days once the lender confirms. Repayment history repair: three to six reporting cycles before lenders treat the profile as reformed.

Frequently asked questions

Does checking my own score reduce it?

No. Self-checks are soft enquiries with no impact. Only lender-initiated hard enquiries affect the score.

Should I close unused credit cards?

Usually not. Closing accounts reduces your total limit — raising utilisation — and shortens credit age. Keep the oldest one active.
